November 14, 1924-February 7, 2025
Born in Toronto to the late Russell and Reta Salmon. John passed in Guelph Ontario in his 101st year. Beloved husband of the late Helen Salmon, loving father of Steve Salmon (Michelle) and Phil Salmon (Janet). Proud grandfather of Scott Salmon (Aleisha), Katrina Salmon (Toby) and great-grandfather of Casey, Tristan and Nova Salmon. Survived by his sister-in-law Dorothea Salmon and niece Melissa Smart (David). Predeceased by his brother Robert (Bob).
Dad grew up in depression era Toronto. When he came of age during the Second World War, he volunteered for active military service and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. Following his training in Canada he was assigned to RCAF 436 Squadron and sent to serve overseas in Burma (Myanmar). He remained there in active service until the end of the war. Following the end of the war he continued his service in England and Germany. On returning home he began his apprenticeship as an auto mechanic. Soon after that he met the love of his life, Helen Robertson, who would become his wife and our Mom. They built a house together following the war, got married. had two sons (us) and started a lifelong partnership. Mom and Dad raised their family and ran their own automotive business for many years. The early years where in “north” North York, then onto Markham, and then up to the Peterborough area in retirement. Sadly, Mom passed during their time in Peterborough and following some solo time there Dad moved to Guelph to be closer to his kids as he got older. Dad continued to be amazed that he made it to 100 years old and up until the last few months remained mentally sharp while at the same time dealing with an aging body.
To those who were friends of Mom and Dad (they came as a pair) we thank you for your kindness. We also thank the caregivers at Chartwell Wellington and the Guelph General Hospital for their care of Dad in his later years.
A life well lived, and knowing Mom and Dad are back together gives us peace. As per Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and no memorial service is planned. A private family graveside service will take place later in the year.
