A Life Filled with Love, Strength, and Unwavering Generosity. It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Helen Prior (formerly Bates) at the age of 92, surrounded by love.
Helen was not just a beloved mother, nana, great-grandmother, and friend—she was a beacon of warmth, joy, and strength. Her boundless love, generous spirit, and unwavering kindness touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Helen was a woman of great resilience, grace, and integrity. She dedicated many years of her life to Famous Players movie theatres and played an instrumental role in running the family business, Bates Excavators. Helen also enjoyed her time as a member of the Soroptimist club, where she worked to support others and her community. Through her work and the relationships she built, Helen’s vibrant energy and joyful spirit touched everyone she encountered. Her laughter was contagious, her compassion limitless, and her gift for making others feel truly loved was unmatched.
Helen was preceded in death by her beloved first husband, John Douglas Bates, her sons Michael and Stephen, and her second husband, Arnold Prior—all of whom she cherished deeply. But her love and devotion extended far beyond her own family; she created a ripple effect of warmth, generosity, and light that will continue to echo through the lives of those who were fortunate to know her.
Helen will be forever missed by her devoted daughter Sherry (Bill), her loyal son Paul (Linda), and her supportive daughter-in-law, Jamie (Stephen), whose unwavering love and commitment meant the world to Helen. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy in her grandchildren: Crystal (Mark), Jill (Dave), Sean (Deanna), Matthew (Kim), and Shane, each of whom carries a piece of her love, wisdom, and joy. Her grandchildren were the pride of her heart, and she filled their lives with countless cherished memories. She also leaves a lasting impression on her adored great-grandchildren: Victoria, Aleks, Grayson, Brynn, Kinley, and Addison, who will forever treasure the special moments spent with their Great Nan—the one who always made them feel loved, heard, and deeply valued. Her guidance, warm spirit, and unyielding love will live on in them always.
Helen’s love and light will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Now, as she watches over us from the heavens, the sun shines a little warmer, and the stars sparkle a little brighter. Her beautiful soul will forever be remembered, and her kindness, generosity, and joy for life will continue to inspire all who were touched by her presence. She truly was one of a kind, and her memory will be forever cherished.
In Helen’s honor, a tree will be planted as a lasting tribute to her beautiful spirit. A private family service will be held at a later date to celebrate her life and the love she shared with those around her.
