July 31, 1955 – January 31, 2025
It is with broken hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Doug, surrounded by his family on Friday January 31 at the young age of 69. Doug was a proud Guelphite for his entire life, having been born and raised here. He loved sports, especially football, baseball, hockey and golf and enjoyed many years umpiring. In high school, he earned the moniker of the ‘Comeback Kid’ having made a full recovery from a gruesome leg injury to win Athlete of the Year at John F. Ross. His experience through this injury helped the medical team save the limb of another local athlete, for which Doug was rightfully very proud. In his later years, he also picked up the hobbies of fishing, playing darts and doing puzzles. In 2020, he finally got that elusive hole-in-one at ‘Vic East’. Doug had a great fondness for camping and frequented many of the parks around Ontario. He was a dedicated courier for Purolator for 34 years, and will be missed by the entire Purolator family. Throughout his life, Doug was often the life of the party with his quick wit, and terrible dad jokes. Above all else, his family meant the world to him. Doug was the beloved husband of Patricia. Devoted Father of Becky (Matt), Pam (Jeff), Cody (Shannon), Jen (Jon), Danny (Caitlin) and Michele (Greg). Adored Grandpa of Jackson, Ben, Dylan, Kingston, Evelyn, Lucas, Natalie, Julia, Claire, Isabel, Lincoln, Marlowe, Gus and Brooklyn. Doug will be dearly missed by his seven siblings: Joanne (Paddy), Dave (Pat), Bryan (Susan), Judy (Ken), Bill (Dana), Greg (Carol), and Karen (Steve). He was predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Mae and father-in-law Gord. He is survived by his mother-in-law Rose, in-laws Lynn (Ron), Kathy (Dane), and Joan (Dave). He will be lovingly remembered by many other relatives and friends.
A special thank you to all the wonderful people who cared for Doug along his short journey with cancer. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice Wellington or the Canadian Cancer Society. A drop-in celebration of life will take place at Victoria Park Golf Club East, Guelph on February 22nd from 1 – 5 PM. We encourage any attendees to wear bright colours (orange was his favourite) in honour of Doug.
