August 21, 1940 – January 29, 2025
Ian passed away peacefully at Guelph General Hospital on January 29, 2025, in his 85th year. He shared a wonderful 60 years with his beloved wife, Vera Michael, (nee Hopkins). He was the loving father of Warren (Heather Chase) and Kevin (Karen McKay). He was the proud grandfather of Matthew, Joseph, Grace, Colin, Emily, and Sara.
Ian was born in Shoreham on the southern English coast to a family of nine children. His family moved to Wales when he was a young boy and in his early teens he worked in the coal mines. In his late teens he moved back to the south of England where he then trained as a Tool and Die Maker and courted Vera. They married in 1964 and shortly thereafter started their family. In 1973, they made the brave decision to seek a better life for their two young children in Canada where they settled in Guelph with the help of friends. Shortly after emigrating, Ian started work at Blount (Omark) where he would often work overtime to provide opportunities for his family. In the eighties, he started teaching in the Machine Tool Setter Operator program at Guelph Conestoga College Campus. Shortly thereafter, he instructed in the Tool and Die Apprenticeship Program at the Doon Campus.
Ian could often be found on his time off visiting with friends and relatives, soaking up the sun with a good book or simply watching the world go by. In retirement, Vera and Ian enjoyed numerous trips to the Caribbean and touring Canada. They found incredible joy in the many summers spent at their trailer just outside of Goderich.
He was well renowned for his terrible photography, his secret sweet tooth, his calm reliability and incredible wit. For those lucky enough to know him or call him Grandad, he was the first call when anyone needed a ride home, help on a project or to borrow a tool and he offered all without hesitation and without judgement. His memory will live on fondly in freezing cold pools, blueberry pies, Tilley hats, and the love found in his small but thoughtful acts of service to friends, family and neighbours and anyone who might just need a hand. His innate knack for using humour and kindness to connect with others continues in his grandchildren. Ian's greatest legacy will be the way he quietly modelled for his sons and grandchildren what it truly means to be a loving spouse, devoted Dad and caring Grandad.
Until December 2024, Ian had the incredible fortune of good health. In the last 2 months, he interacted with our healthcare system more than he had his entire life and each time he was met with warmth, compassion and professionalism. Our family is so grateful for the exceptional care provided at Guelph General Hospital and the Guelph community.
Cremation and a private family celebration have occurred. A celebration of life will be planned in the months ahead.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to Guelph General Hospital, or to the charity of your choice.
