Surrounded by the love of his family, Merlen passed peacefully into the arms of his saviour on Wednesday January 19, 2022 at Groves Hospital. Merlen, in his 88th year, was the cherished husband and true partner of Doreen (Schulz) for over 61 years. Eternally loved father of Dale Joseph (Kerri) and Debra Ann. Adored Grandpa of Tyler (Jessica), Vanessa (Joel) and Allison Kropf, Alexis and Noah Ramage. Proud Great-Grandpa of his four great-grandsons, Emmett and Leo Morden and Nathan and Blake Kropf. Survived by his beloved siblings, his sister, Bernice Wagler and his brother, Delford Kropf, many dear brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Hilda Kropf, Marilyn and John Schuller, Arleen and Paul Meyer, Dennis and Kathy Schulz, and Joan and Larry Kieswetter. Precious and beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Joseph and Bena (Bender) Kropf, his brother, Floyd Kropf, brothers-in-law Harold Schulz and Laverne Wagler, sister-in-law Jean Schulz and nieces Valerie Schulz and Nadine Willard. Merlen was blessed with a long, full life of love, friendship and success. He enjoyed travel, all social gatherings, sporting events, and was a dedicated, life-long fan of the Montreal Canadiens. From humble beginnings on the family farm in South Easthope, Merlen’s strong work ethic and sharp business sense saw him become a highly respected entrepreneur. He founded L&M Food Markets in 1965 in a former Steinburg’s Grocery location in Fergus. Over 56 years the family business grew to include ten grocery locations and two golf courses. Merlen was honoured to receive the CFIG 1999 Life Member Award, as well as several local Centre Wellington Chamber of Commerce awards. The blessing of Merlen’s success was never lost on him; he was of a generous heart, supporting many charities and social causes, and a gracious, wise mentor to many throughout his life’s journey. The foundation of Merlen’s legacy will remain his faith in his Lord; whom he knew, loved, and served daily, his devotion to his cherished family, and the gift of friendship that he shared with so many throughout the years.
A private family service will be held at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when restrictions are rescinded. Memorial donations may be made to Mennonite Central Comm., Cystic Fibrosis Canada, Heart and Stroke Foundation or Groves Memorial Hospital.
