It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Jack (J.J.), a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend to many. John was one of eight children born to Antanas and Flora Jean Zakaras.

John and his wife, Frances (McDade), were married on February 11, 1961, in Motherwell, Scotland. They began a life of adventure and companionship, marked by unwavering love and mutual support throughout more than 63 years of marriage. Their eternal love was beautifully expressed through a lifetime of memories they shared with each other, their family and their friends.

In 1967, John emigrated from Scotland to Canada, arriving on October 24. He was initially welcomed by friend, Jean and her family before “setting up house” as they say. On April 15 of the following year, Frances and their children, Frances Jr. and Steven, joined him in Canada.

Reunited with his family, John pursued various careers, beginning as a butcher before becoming a compassionate nurse. He graduated from Conestoga College in 1981, alongside his son Steven, who studied mechanical drafting. John then began his long and dedicated career at Homewood Health Center, where he served as a nurse for 18 years.

John was a proud grandfather to Robert Purdy, Ryan Purdy, Zachary Crenna, and Colbey Crenna. His grandchildren brought him immense joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them, whether at hockey games and soccer matches or on trips back to Scotland. John was honored to then become a great-grandfather to Natalya Lagare, Taylor Lagare-Purdy and Oliver Purdy.

John was known for his uplifting energy and his ability to find joy in the simplest moments. His vibrant spirit and sense of humor brought light and warmth to those around him, making every gathering and interaction a cherished occasion.

His passion for entertaining was prevalent as he often sang at home, or with his band at the Fergus Highland Games and local long-term care homes over many years.

John’s life was enriched by the love of his family and friends, both near and far.

It’s the friends you meet along the path of life that hold a special place in your heart. Until we meet again, keep shining, keep singing, and keep smiling.

In lieu of cards and flowers, we instead ask for donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.

The Jack family will receive relatives and friends at the Brombal Funeral Home, One Delhi Street, Guelph on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, from 4:00p.m. – 7:00p.m. and on Thursday, August 29, 2024 from 10:00a.m. – 11:00a.m. followed by a funeral service in the chapel of the funeral home  at 11:00 a.m. A reception will be held at the funeral home.
