November 5, 1939 – March 6, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Saverio Italiano on March 6, 2025 surrounded by his family at the age of 85. A devoted husband, father, Nonno, brother, Zio and friend, he leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and dedication to his family.
Born in Delianuova, RC, Italy on November 5, 1939, Saverio immigrated to Canada in April 1965 in search of new opportunities. It was here that he met the love of his life, Maria Rosaria Papalia, and together they built a beautiful life, celebrating 56 wonderful years of marriage. A proud and devoted father, he cherished his three children; Teresa Howlett (Tim), Elsa Hodgert (Mike) and Joe Italiano (Amanda). But nothing brought him greater joy than his six beloved grandchildren; Austin, Owen, Ethan, Mikaela, Jaycob and Emma and his precious great-grandson, Luca. His greatest pride was watching them grow, and his happiest moments were spent surrounded by family.
He is predeceased by his parents Giuseppe and Maria Teresa Italiano, brother Annunziato Italiano, sister Maria Strano and his in-laws Nazzareno and Gelsomina Papalia. He is survived by his siblings Angelo Italiano (Rosa), Antonino Italiano (Angela) and many nieces and nephews in Australia.
Well known in the Guelph community as “Sam the Tailor man”, he turned his passion and skill into a lifelong career, and eventually opened his own tailor shop, Sam’s Tailoring, in downtown Guelph. His shop became a gathering place where he greeted customers as friends, sharing stories and his expert craftsmanship. His dedication to his work and the relationships he built along the way made him a cherished part of the community.
A proud Italian, he never forgot his roots, carrying his heritage in his heart. His love for Italian culture, traditions and soccer was unmatched. In his early years he showcased his passion and talent for soccer as a semi-professional player in Australia and Italy. His passion for the game led him to become a loyal AS Roma fan. He never missed a chance to cheer for his team, whether celebrating victories or lamenting their defeats.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in the memories he left us and the love he so freely gave. His kindness, humour, and strength will remain in our hearts forever, and his legacy will live on in the family he loves so deeply.
Resting at the Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon St., Guelph, where the family will receive their friends on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 from 2–4 pm and 7-9 pm. A funeral will take place on Wednesday, March 12 at 10:30 am at St. John Parish, 45 Victoria Rd N, Guelph. Entombment at Mary Mount Cemetery, followed by a reception at Gilbert McIntyre & Son Funeral Home.
