It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan Ireland (née Jewell) at the age of 86 on February 13, 2025. Mom passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Guelph General Hospital after a brief illness.
Mom is predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, David Ireland (d. 2022); her sister and best friend, Marilyn Langlois, who predeceased her by only 12 days; brother-in-law Robert Langlois (d. 2020); sister-in-law Patricia Wettlaufer (d. 2024); brother-in-law Ken Wettlaufer (d. 2022); and her beloved parents, Harry and Bertha Jewell.
Mom will be dearly missed by her six devoted children: Mary-Ann (Tim) Kiely, Bill (Tara), Shelley (Joe) Monaco, Steven (Shelva), Michael (Ladonna), and Patrick (Colleen). Grammy, as she was affectionately known, is lovingly remembered by her 15 adoring grandchildren: Lindsay, Claire (Brad), Eric (Nicki), Nolan, Alex (Carlie), Katie (Ben), Sarah (Marc), Natalie (Adam), Alison, Leah, Liam, Ethan, Ainslie, Zachary, and Chloe (Cole), as well as her 4½ great- grandchildren: Olivia, Emily, Anna, Isla, and soon-to-be Baby Kiely.
Mom is also survived by her in-laws Bob and Sharon Ireland, Peter and Jean Ireland, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mom lived a life of love, strength, and generosity, all with an unwavering Catholic faith. She was the former president of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Women’s League, worked with Meals on Wheels for many years and volunteered with numerous charities.
Mom’s love and light will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her beautiful soul will forever be remembered, and her kindness, compassion, and joy will continue to inspire all who were touched by her presence. Her memory will be forever cherished.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and doctors on the 5th-floor ICU at Guelph General Hospital for their compassionate care and support during Mom’s final days.
Visitation will be held at the Brombal Funeral Home, 1 Delhi St., Guelph, on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Parish prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 409 Paisley Rd., Guelph, on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow.
Interment of ashes in Marymount Cemetery will take place at a later date.
