July 10, 1931 – October 14, 2024

Beloved wife of the late Robert (Bob) Heming (d. 2022). Survived by children Thomas (Lucinda), Peter (Sharon), Susan (Colin Sewell) and Allison Wagner (Benjamin), and grandmother to Kirsten, Derek, Tyler (Jara), Erin (Kaitlin), Kaitlyn (Jonathan Chapman), and Raimond, Cameron and Matthew Madill, and great-grandmother to Norah Heming-Chapman. Predeceased by daughter Cynthia Louise (stillborn 1956). Survived by brother Lionel (Dorothy) of Port Moody, BC.

Born at home in Guelph in 1931, Mavis attended city schools and GCVI, and then began a career with Bell Telephone as a Switchboard Operator. In addition to her full-time role as wife and mother, Mavis enjoyed employment with Zellers (Credit Office), Ontario University Application Centre, and in roles supporting Provincial and Federal elections.

Married to Bob Heming in 1951, Mavis and Bob enjoyed life in Guelph until 1973 when they built a home on the Heming property in Guelph Township. Thus began a new life of deeply rewarding community spirit. In addition to active participation in rural community groups, Mavis was elected and served seven years on the Guelph Township Council and three years on the Parks Committee, prior to the Township amalgamation.

In 1988, Mavis was presented with the Government of Canada Award of Merit for her work with Ontario 4-H, Riverside Women’s Institute, IODE and Guelph Township Horticultural Society. She was honoured with Life Membership in Guelph Township Horticultural Society and Victoria Guelph IODE, in both Mavis held several executive positions over many years.

When husband Bob retired from the City of Guelph, they spent leisure time at the family cottage near Pointe Au Baril, where they deeply enjoyed the near-north. Eventually, health necessitated a move to the care, comfort, and companionship of The Village of Riverside Glen, where Mavis re-united with friends, and made many more. We thank the staff for their care and kindness to Mavis and our family.

A special thank you to the staff and residents of Riverside Glen and Hospice Wellington for the care and compassion shown towards Mavis.

As she requested, internment at Woodlawn Memorial Park will commemorate the life of Mavis Heming.

Memorial donations in Mavis Heming’s name may be made to Arthur Animal Rescue (registered charity # 73200 2019 RR001) online or c/o 144 Marshall Heights Road, Durham ON N0G 1R0.

There’s a golden glow in the western sky, as day slowly fades into night.

And life, like the day as it fades away, will quietly fade from sight.

It’s a peaceful end to a life well-spent, and time moves along, as it must.

The final chapter, the last page done, the future is left to trust.

And as memories fade in the mist of time, love will forever endure.

‘Til the rivers run dry, and the birds cease to fly and the last wave laps at the shore.
