(1942-2024)
Mary Isabel Harkness, a longtime resident of Waterloo, passed away peacefully at Hospice Wellington on December 27, 2024, at the age of 82. Born in Palmerston, Ontario, on December 16, 1942, Mary grew up on her family farm, cultivating a lifelong love for animals and the countryside.
A dedicated educator, Mary graduated from Western University with a Bachelor of Nursing and embarked on a fulfilling career in Nursing Education. She began her teaching journey at K-W Hospital and continued with Conestoga College, where she mentored countless aspiring healthcare professionals. She slowed down a bit in 1997 enjoying semi-Retirement having given up her full-time position. Not willing to completely leave her calling, she remained a valuable asset to the college as part-time faculty in both Nursing and PSW programs for many years.
Mary's passion for animals was unwavering. A testament to her powers of persuasion even as a child, she convinced her parents to welcome a sweet baby SKUNK into their home. Well, at least until it matured to the point that its smelly defence system was operational! To say her animals were pampered is an understatement! Animals were always a central part of her life. Mary went to great lengths to give them everything she thought they wanted. Being a skilled rider, Mary enjoyed the thrill of showing her horses. She also found solace in riding her horses in the quiet of the countryside. Mary had a particular fondness for Shelties, a breed deeply connected to her Scottish heritage, she often took in retired show dogs. She rescued numerous cats throughout her life, providing a loving home for many unwanted animals. She always made sure to leave food out for any strays or feral critters that might wander into her garage for a meal or shelter.
A talented craftswoman, Mary was an active member of the quilters guild. While she ran her own quilting business, most of her exquisite creations were lovingly crafted for her nephews and dear friends.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Wilfred and Isabel Harkness; her brother, James Harkness; and her beloved aunt Margaret and uncle Jim. She is also, predeceased by her lifelong best friend, Brenda.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Doreen Harkness; nephews and nieces, Alan Harkness and Frank Wu, Doug and Charlene Harkness, John Harkness, James Harkness, and Wai Kin Chan; and their children.
Mary will be deeply missed by her colleagues at Conestoga College, especially those at the campus of the living classroom at the village of Riverside Glen, who admired her incredible work ethic, wonderful sense of humor, and her vibrant and unforgettable personality.
