Passed away peacefully in Guelph on February 4, 2025.
Born in Guelph, ON, on September 21, 1943, Lawrence Charles Gowan entered the world just minutes ahead of his twin brother, John Lyman Gowan. He was the beloved son of John and Mary Elizabeth Gowan. Lawrence, known affectionately as Larry, was a devoted husband to Bonnie Gowan, whom he married in 1964. He was a loving father to Bradley (Lisa Meriano), Tracey, and Wendy (Glenn Mick), and a very proud grandfather to Hunter. Larry was predeceased by Bonnie in 2023, his parents and his brothers and sisters-in-law: William (Doris), Paul (Shirley), and John (Pat). He was also a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Larry’s journey of sobriety began on October 25, 1975. Over the course of 17,999 days, he lived each day “One Day at a Time.” He deeply valued the fellowship of those who walked alongside him on this path, especially appreciating the transportation to meetings and visits when travel became difficult.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to everyone at The Villages of Riverside Glen for the care and support Larry received in his final months. A special thank you to Valerie for her constant presence and support.
Larry’s legacy of love, strength, and perseverance will forever be remembered by his family and friends. If you wish to honour Larry’s memory, take a moment and have a coffee with someone in your life who may be struggling.
At Larry’s request, cremation has taken place, and a private family service will be held at a later date.
