Passed away at Hospice Wellington on December 30th, 2024, in his 83rd year with his family at his side.
Beloved husband of the late Grace Dickie. Loved father of Robert (Karen), Elizabeth Clattenburg, both of Guelph, and John of Waterloo. Loving grandfather of Dean and Claire Clattenburg, affectionately known as the Wee Two. Step-Grandfather of Jennifer Pacey and Sarah McLaren. Dear brother of Bobbie Dickie of Scotland. He will be remembered by many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Pam Murdock, Bruce Gilbert, and the Evans family for their unwavering support. They would also like to thank all his good friends at the Fat Duck and ‘Annie’s’ for their love and support. Hugh was blessed with many friends, too numerous to list them all individually, but they held a special place in his heart.
Hugh was born in Knightswood-Glasgow, Scotland to Robert and Lilias Dickie. He moved to Canada with his wife and first born son over 50 years ago. He had a deep passion for playing the bagpipes and was instrumental in starting the Col. John McCrae pipe band. Hugh was also actively involved in the Guelph pipe band and the Sault Ste Marie Pipe band for many years. He was employed as a correctional officer for many years at the Guelph Correctional Centre before transferring to the Northern Treatment Centre in Sault Ste Marie, where he served as a shift supervisor.
Hugh had a love for gardening and always had a large vegetable garden on the go at home. One of his happiest times at work was when he was assigned to the farm operation, working in the fields with his crew. Hugh was an avid Toronto Maple Leaf’s fan and each year hoped they would bring the Stanley Cup home.
His family and friends will deeply miss his wit and stories, and they will forever cherish his memory.
The family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Graham, the nurses, and all the staff at Hospice Wellington for the excellent and compassionate care they provided to Hugh and his family.
As per Hugh’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
