Fay Gwendoline Cooney ~ Nov 19, 1934 – Nov 12, 2024
Predeceased by husband Keith, son Dwayne, parents Gladys & Wilbert Jones, step-father Vernon Hogeboom and a long list of friends and family who have loved and been loved by Gwen. Survived by son Darrell, spouse Stefanie and grandsons Joshua and Andrew.
Mom was born and raised an only child north of Marmora, Ontario. Growing up in the depression and World War Two, she developed a work and value system of deep dedication and care. This followed her all of her life, taking on the responsibility of supporting dad’s work and frequent moves, along with raising two boys very much on her own once dad took on his area pastor role.
It seemed like everywhere mom moved; she would find like minded individuals who bonded in small intimate clusters. They not only enjoyed and cared for each other, but were incredible supporters of family, church and community. There was so much fulfillment and happiness in these clusters, such amazing women!
Mom and dad were fortunate to travel extensively and spend reasonable time in Florida wintering and summers at Westley Acres Camp. Add friends, toss a board game on the table and you had one laughing smiling lady! Could we all learn something about keeping it that simple! Visits were not just limited to social outings. Her ability to sit with the ill and the elderly, to provide support with needs, or to just listen was unwavering. Family was community, whether related was simply a technicality.
Mom was infectious, her spirit and spark could move the grumpiest of us. Her fortitude and strength outweighed her tiny stature. What she lacked in formal education she made up for in mother’s intuition and utter selflessness. I honestly don’t recall her ever buying anything for herself. She often made dad take back presents he gifted to her, which were really gifts to himself…anybody want an electric keyboard for Xmas 😊
While her abilities and capacity left her in the past few years, her strength in spirituality remained. I cannot extend enough gratitude to the caretakers at the Elliot LTC facility for fostering her spiritual needs and the wonderful care provided. Thank you to all of you who played a part in Gwen’s life, the woman I am so blessed to call mom.
My parents final wish was for a joint celebration of life to be held at Beaver Creek Cemetery. This will take place Saturday, June 7th, 2025 with lunch to follow at a location to be determined in Marmora. Mom’s favourite charities, were local churches, foreign missionary work or your local food bank.
