AVONDALE, ARIZ. - Guelph resident Robert Wickens finished second at the IndyCar race in Avondale, Arizona, on Saturday night.

Wickens was leading late in the race before being passed by Josef Newgarden with three laps remaining in the 250-lap event to take the victory, finishing just under three seconds ahead of Wickens.

While not born in Guelph, Wickens moved here as a young child and spent his early racing years based in Guelph. He still calls the Royal City his home and regularly spends time here.

It was just the second race of Wickens' IndyCar career and first on an oval course after switching to the circuit this year. In his first race, on a street course in St. Petersburg, Fla., he was leading late in the race before being being involved in an accident that ended his day.

Next race is Sunday, April 15, in Long Beach California.
