George McPhee finally has his elusive Stanley Cup.
The Guelph native lifted the trophy on the ice Tuesday night after the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Florida Panthers 9-3 in Game 5 of the final.
McPhee has been with the Knights since the team's inception in 2016, first serving as general manager. He now works as the team's president of hockey operations.
It was McPhee's fourth trip to the final as an executive.
Before he helped the Knights to its previous finals appearance in 2018 – Vegas' inaugural season – he was the GM and vice president of hockey operations in Washington when the Caps lost to Detroit in 1998.
His first finals appearance was as the director and vice president of hockey operations with Vancouver in 1994.
McPhee collected accolades as a player before that, starting with two seasons with the hometown Guelph Holody Platers in the late 70's, before moving on to the NCAA ranks.
He played four years at Bowling Green State University, capping it off with two years as captain and won the Hobey Baker Award in his final year as the best NCAA men's hockey player in 1982.
McPhee followed that up with a seven-year NHL career with the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils in the 1980's.
