A Jekyll and Hyde type of weekend for the Guelph Royals.
After blanking the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers 9-0 Saturday, the bats fell flat Sunday on the road, losing 9-1 to the same Barnstormers team.
On Saturday, Kyle Thomas, Nelson Mercado and Yomar Concepcion combined for 17 strikeouts and gave up a combined four hits in the shutout win.
Guelph pulled ahead early with a four-run second inning and never looked back.
Thomas and Mercado both went four innings, with Mercado being credited with the win.
Brock Whitson gave up six runs on 11 hits in five innings of work in the loss.
Blake Simpson and Garrett Takamatsu both had three hits for Guelph. Recent signing and former LA Angels prospect Franklin Torres went four-for-five with a pair of runs driven in.
He would also go two-for-four on Sunday in a losing effort. They were two of just four hits in the back half of the home-and-home for the Royals.
Hector Yan was pulled with one away in the third after giving up four runs (three earned) on two hits. He walked five and struck out four in the loss.
His counterpart, Cam O’Reilly, gave up one run on one hit in six innings for the win.
The Royals sit at 17-12 on the year, just a game behind London for third place in the IBL standings with 13 games left.
Guelph will host Barrie Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
