The Guelph Gryphons will be looking to take care of some unfinished business on Saturday night.
A year after losing the the OUA men’s hockey final on the road at Queen’s, the Gryphons will host the Ottawa Gee-Gees in a winner-takes-all Queen’s Cup final starting at 7 p.m.
The Gryphons and Gee-Gees both finished the season in third place in their respective conferences. Guelph had one more point than Ottawa.
Tickets for the game are $15 for adults and seniors, $10 for youth and U of G students and children under six are free.
Guelph is ranked fourth in the country. Ottawa third.
"The returning guys, specifically, remember the disappointment of not winning the Queen's Cup last year," said Gryphons head coach Shawn Camp in a news release. "Although everyone was thrilled that we were able to go to nationals, it still feels like there is some unfinished business among the players."
Guelph advanced to the final by beating Western 2-1 in a best-of-three conference final.
The Gryphs and Gee-Gees met once in the regular season, a 5-4 win in overtime last October in Ottawa.
"They are a very experienced and veteran team that learned from their playoff loss last year," Camp said.
"They have four balanced lines, along with big, mobile defencemen, and their goaltending has been solid. Their roster does not have any weak holes."
Guelph will be looking for looking for its seventh OUA title in program history and its first since 2015.
Camp expects being on home ice to be a factor.
"Being at home is like having an extra player on the ice," said Camp. "The noise, the atmosphere, the enthusiasm and that fact that we get to enjoy this with our community and students on campus is such a wonderful experience for everybody."
Both teams are already guaranteed a spot in the U SPORTS national championship tournament in Halifax next week.
