CAMBELLVILLE - Mohawk Racetrack will be hosting harness racing year-round starting in 2018.

Woodbine Entertainment, which owns the racetrack and casino at the Guelph Line facility, also announced that it will be investing $10 million into the facility.

The announcement came earlier this week during the post-position draw for this Saturday's $1 million Pepsi North American Cup.

Currently Mohawk hosts harness racing from April to October. During the winter, the harness racing is shifted to Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.

This winter will be the final season for harness at Woodbine.

“The future is very bright for standardbred racing and entertainment on this site,” said Jim Lawson, CEO for Woodbine Entertainment, in a news release.

“With the long term gaming lease in place and with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming (OLG) expected to name a new gaming service provider soon, it’s a very exciting time to be a racing fan and be involved in the sport. Standardbred horse people are a significant part of the fabric of this community and will soon be able to race 12 months of the year here.”

Construction will begin in the fall of 2017 and is scheduled to be completed by spring 2018.

The upgrades include winterization of the grandstand, race paddock and maintenance facilities, new glass windows across the Terrace Dining Room, VIP suites and further customer amenities.

The name is also changing, as Mohawk will be known as Woodbine at Mohawk Park starting in May.
