The University of Guelph is reporting two new cases of COVID-19, the first cases of the fall semester.

The cases come during the second week of classes of the new semester and were reported on the universities COVID-19 updates page as having been found on Monday on the Guelph campus.

This is the first report on new cases since Sep. 2 when the university reported a single case found at the Guelph campus.

Region schools have been dealing with COVID cases since the second day of classes on Sept. 8, with 12 region area schools reporting at least one COVID case.

On Wednesday, a total of 19 cases were reported between the University of Guelph, the Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic District School Board.

A spokesperson from the university said: "Our case reporting includes anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 within 14 days of being on campus. Given there are positive cases in the broader community, it is not unexpected that there would be people coming to campus who test positive. We have been reporting our case numbers over the past year and a half and having two cases within the two-week reporting period is not out of the ordinary. To protect our community, the University has a vaccine mandate that requires proof of vaccination and strict COVID-19 protocols in place. We will continue to communicate to our community about the importance of getting vaccinated and following the health and safety measures set out by public health to prevent the spread of COVID-19."
