The Guelph Fire Department is reminding the public to make sure all stove elements are turned off before leaving the house after a late morning house fire Thursday.
A passerby called 911 after hearing the working smoke alarm from the house at 64 Durham St., said Tony Sabatini, chief fire prevention officer.
No one was home at the time of the fire, which Sabatini said was caused by an unattended pot left on the stove.
"People (should) be cognizant to check their kitchen before exiting and verify that all stove elements are in the “off” position," said Sabatini by email.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire and there was not much damage, said Sabatini.
