Details like instructor names and class locations will only be available behind a secure log in following June stabbings at the University of Waterloo

The University of Guelph is taking some extra precautionary measures for the upcoming semester in the wake of a hate-motivated triple stabbing at the University of Waterloo earlier this summer.

Geovanny Villalba-Aleman, 24, is facing multiple charges after stabbing two students and a professor in a gender studies class at the University of Waterloo on June 28.

The attack shook the academic community and left many fearful of returning to the classroom in the fall.

In response, the University of Waterloo announced Monday it plans to remove instructor names and class locations from public websites, among several other security measures – and the University of Guelph plans to do the same.

“As we prepare for fall semester, we are in the process of removing identifying information such as room locations and instructor names from public facing pages and keeping them behind the university's secure log in,” said director of communications Deirdre Healey.

“We have also conducted security assessments of our classrooms to ensure all safety measures are in place,” she said. “We will be launching an extensive communications campaign around campus safety measures that includes encouraging community members to access the personal safety tools available.”

She said campus community members will also be encouraged to use the university’s training and resources around fostering safe and inclusive spaces, which includes sexual and gender-based violence training, as well as anti-oppression and anti-racism training.
