Third annual Bike The Night illuminated ride set for Sept. 9

Prizes to be awarded for best illuminated bicycle and best costume

Bike the Night will be making its luminescent return on Sept. 9, as organizers are somewhat shifting gears as the event’s starting point moves downtown.

The awareness-raising, community event will begin and end at Market Square, in front of city hall, this time around. Previously, it started at Exhibition Park and made its way through a variety of parks and into The Ward before finishing in front of city hall.

"This year it'll be a loop," said Mike Darmon, a member of the Guelph Coalition for Active Transportation which is hosting the ride. He notes the previous practice of having different starting and finish points left some folks "stranded" at the end.

"It'll be a bit safer for everybody too," he added, noting police are on tap to shut down intersections rather than have the group split up by changing traffic signals. "Hopefully it'll be a smoother, more enjoyable ride."

Bike The Night is open to riders of all ages and abilities who want to participate in the “lit up party on wheels,” which is intended to also raise awareness about street cycling safety.

Participants are encouraged to decorate their bicycle with lights, reflectors and stickers, with riders urged to don a creative costume. Awards will be presented for the best illuminated entry as well as best costume.

The event is slated to run from 7 to 10 p.m., with the ride itself setting off at 8 p.m. Helmets are mandatory for riders younger than 18 and strongly recommended for adults as well.

Prior to the ride, a variety of local delegates are slated to address attendees. There will also be some lights and other items available for people to decorate their bicycle with, though supplies will be limited.
