BELWOOD – A brand new farmers’ market is popping up in Centre Wellington.

The Belwood Farmers’ Market will run for the first time starting May 19 and running each Sunday until Oct. 6 at the Skol House at 24 N Broadway St.

The Skol House is a former schoolhouse property undergoing renovations that acted as an events venue with weekly concerts the previous summer.

“We had been toying with ideas on how to cross utilize the space next door at the Skol House, the events in the summer were really wonderful and we as a collective team decided that a farmers’ market would be really good,” said Tasha Fischer, events coordinator at the Skol House.

Fischer with Skol House owners Jeff Wilde and Noah Klar decided Sunday was the better day to avoid competing with other farmers’ markets such as Elora’s which is held on Saturday.

“We didn’t want our vendors to feel like they had to choose,” Fischer said.

Each market will run 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. which Fischer said gives people time to come before or after religious services as traditionally farmers’ markets run during that time.

Last summer, the Skol House team learned just how locally-focused Belwood is as a community, which is helping inform this farmers’ market.

“We only sold local beers, spirits and we focused a lot on local talent as well for the shows,” Fischer said. “That’s kind of why we decided to do the farmers’ market as we wanted to showcase other local creators and that stretches all the way from people who make clay earrings to people who grow vegetables in their backyard. They deserve a good place to showcase their wares.”

Beyond just locals, Fischer said she has seen comments from regular cottagers in the area who are looking forward to having a place to walk over on Sundays.

The Belwood Farmers’ Market will be accepting applications up to the first market with spaces being held for non-profit organizations as well.
