NEWS RELEASE
ST. ANDREW'S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, one of the seven churches featured in Robert White’s new book, will host the launch of The Stone Churches of Downtown Guelph book (on Oct. 28).
The Stone Churches of Downtown Guelph represents the best in 19th century church architecture. Built between 1855 and 1877, most of the buildings are Gothic Revival in style. Two of the buildings feature a simpler design—representative of the congregations’ beliefs at the time.
"I’ve spent much of career photographing news events,” says author/photographer Robert White, whose three-decade long journalism career included a 10-year stint as the editor of ChristianWeek Ontario. “At a photo club I take part in, the members were challenged to move outside their photographic comfort zones. So I began taking photos of Guelph’s downtown churches.”
Starting with the church he attends, Lakeside Downtown, White expanded the project to include the interior and exterior of the seven churches located in Guelph’s downtown in the mid 1800s: Lakeside Downtown (formerly Norfolk Street United Church), St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Knox Presbyterian Church, Royal City Church (formerly Chalmers United Church), First Baptist Church, St. George’s Anglican Church and the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate. Some of the black and white photos can be seen on both Facebook and Instagram.
The book launch, which takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. (on Oct. 28), will feature a short presentation by St. Andrew’s pastor and project supporter, Rev. John Borthwick, a representative from city council and the book’s author, Robert White. Following the formalities, a reception with light refreshments will follow. Those interested in attending the event can RSVP by e-mailing [email protected].
