On Wednesday, March 30, the Guelph Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the University of Guelph and Deloitte, will host the ‘Guelph Economic Leadership Forum: On the Sharing Economy’.
The sharing economy has an estimated global value of $100 billion and is forecasted to grow to an estimated $335 billion in global revenues by 2025.
Municipal governments play an important regulatory role, and can take leadership in establishing an innovative regulatory framework.
This luncheon will focus specifically on how Guelph’s strengths can be leveraged so that our community will become a leader in the sharing economy.
“This event is designed to explore the sharing economy and challenge attendees to think about the scale and scope of this disruptive innovation both locally as well as beyond Canada,” says Guelph Chamber President and CEO Kithio Mwanzia. “The Sharing Economy is not limited to one or two providers, or to Toronto or New York City. It’s both substantively global and hyper-local. Indeed, Guelph is already a leader when it comes to sharing and peer-to-peer networks as evidenced by the robust presence of local co-ops and a high propensity to utilize community bonds as a financing tool.”
The sharing economy presents several key challenges to regulators, including how best to address market failures and concerns over consumer safety and tax compliance.
While other jurisdictions have taken incremental steps to address these challenges, none have moved forward with a truly comprehensive approach.
“This event provides a timely opportunity to discuss the Sharing Economy and how it relates to Guelph’s prosperity. Bringing together global and local leaders in the Sharing Economy is an important step as we strengthen our community’s position as an economic powerhouse,” adds Mwanzia. “This discussion allows for us to build local strategies and be a first mover on an innovative policy framework.”
The ‘Guelph Economic Leadership Forum: On the Sharing Economy’ will take place on Wednesday, March 30, from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Cutten Fields.
