Human interaction is no longer needed to buy lottery tickets in-person. A self-serve lottery terminal pilot program has made its way to Guelph.
Officials with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) announced the project’s launch in February, but it’s still being rolled out. So far, five of the machines have been installed throughout the city, with one more set for this phase of the plan.
“Self-serve terminals will help us meet evolving consumer and retailer preferences while maintaining a strong commitment to responsible play,” said Nancy Kennedy, OLG’s chief lottery and customer officer, in a news release.
The devices can be found at three Zehrs stores – 124 Clair Rd. E., 160 Kortright Rd. and 297 Eramosa Rd. – along with two Little Short Stop locations (6 Willow Rd. and 113 Silvercreek Pkwy. N.).
One is also planned for the Giant Tiger store at 183 Silvercreek Pkwy. N.
“The new (self-service terminals) will not replace the traditional lottery terminals. They will add to the retail experience by providing more convenience for customers,” an OLG spokesperson said via email. “Once the pilot program is over, more will be installed across the province including in the Guelph area.”
In order to prove their age – purchases are restricted to those age 18 and older – terminal-users will need to scan their identification.
The pilot phase of the project is set to wrap-up in May.
