Redeveloper of former Wood plant to share concept plans

Wood Development Group to host meeting Nov. 19 at Italian Canadian Club

Officials in charge of redeveloping a well-known piece of real estate in The Ward is ready to share its first concept plan of the former W.C. Wood plant two property.

Wood Development Group is hosting the town hall meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at the Italian Canadian Club at 6:30 p.m.

It follows a meeting in June where residents submitted input on how to develop the 9.5 acre site.

"We received terrific input from the community that has helped us reimagine this historic industrial site," Susan Frasson, president of the Wood Development Group, said in a news release.

"Throughout the summer, our team has worked diligently to explore the best ways to develop the site."

She said the meeting will help the developer share "the complexities of the site better."

During the summer meeting, Frasson told those in attendance she will do her best to incorporate affordable housing into designs.

The primary goal stated at the meeting was to add housing, but other ideas weren't being ruled out, such as commercial uses, cafes or daycares.

Buildings on the site have been used for warehousing, the interim hub for The SEED and Food4Kids Guelph most recently.

The key building on the site, a three-storey concrete structure, was constructed between 1916 and 1929 by Partridge Rubber Co., and has been identified to be retained throughout the process.

The W.C. Wood Company operated on the site from the 1970s until it sold the property in 2008.

Wood Development Group will be preparing an urban design master plan following the open house, and start the planning applications process with the city.

Detailed design work is expected to begin in late 2026.

Infrastructure work is slated for 2027 or 2028, with officials eyeing post-2028 for construction.

Register for the meeting by going onto the developer's website. A follow up survey will be available on the same site a day after the upcoming meeting.
