The Guelph Police Service Traffic and School Safety Division has received numerous complaints about drivers not following the #RulesOfTheRoad in regard to single-lane roundabouts within the City of Guelph.

When used properly, roundabouts have been proven to effectively keep the flow of traffic moving safely. It should be noted that there are currently no multi-lane roundabouts within the City of Guelph.

The Traffic and School Safety Division would like to remind drivers of the following rules.

When approaching a roundabout:

  • You should reduce your speed in order to navigate the roundabout safely.

When entering a roundabout:

  • You must yield to vehicles already inside the roundabout.
  • You must yield to pedestrians attempting to cross the roadway at a roundabout.
  • Only enter the roundabout when it is safe to do so.
  • Only enter the roundabout in a counter-clockwise direction.

While inside a roundabout:

  • Do not stop in the roundabout.
  • If you miss your exit in the roundabout, continue travelling inside the roundabout in a counter-clockwise direction until it is safe to exit.

When exiting a roundabout:

  • Signal your intent to leave the roundabout.
  • Only exit the roundabout when it is safe to do so.

If you fail to properly yield for vehicles or pedestrians in the roundabout, you could face a fine of $85 or more, and 3 demerit points.

If you drive the wrong way in a roundabout, you could face a fine of $85 or more, and 3 demerit points. If you fail to properly signal your intention to exit the roundabout, you could face a fine of $85 and 2 demerit points.
