More than 2,000 elementary students across Guelph, Wellington and Dufferin County could be facing suspension due to missing immunizations or out of date records.

Under the Immunization of School Pupils Act, students in Ontario are required to be vaccinated against several illnesses, including measles, mumps, meningitis, rubella, pertussis, polio, tetanus, and diphtheria.

In February, there were over 4,000 elementary students with missing vaccines or out of date records. That number has since gone down to 2,290, according to Wellington-Dufferin Guelph Public Health

Some students may not be up-to-date with the required immunizations, while others simply might not have updated their records with public health.

Religious and medical exemptions are allowed under specific conditions.

Public Health noted on Wednesday it was experiencing higher call volumes than normal due to elementary student immunization notices.

They are accepting walk-in appointments if capacity allows at their Guelph and Fergus clinics on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can also book an appointment online
