Family, friends, and supporters all pose with Orpha to celebrate her birthday.

Orpha Thrasher wanted to do something special to mark a very special birthday.

Turning 100 in February, the Guelph woman set out months earlier to complete 100 walks in the 100 days leading up to that special day.

Family members joined her, friends came out, even strangers strutted alongside on occasion as the goal gained momentum.

On the big day in January Orpha was joined by mayor Cam Guthrie and MPP Mike Schreiner and 20 or so others for her 100th walk at Riverside Park.

Not only did the walks mark a special occasion for a special lady, it also helped raise over $22,000 for Hope House. screenshot-2022-12-16-115337-am

“You don't wake up in the morning thinking, ‘I'd love to walk,' but with this in mind, I get out there and do it. And when I come back, I am actually energized enough to do things around the house," Orpha told GuelphToday.

Her walks took place at various locations, including Riverside Park and Guelph Lake. When the weather made it too nasty to go outside, she hopped on a treadmill or walked up and down the stairs.

Her efforts even motivated a nine-year-old Kitchener lad, who did his own 100 walks and raised money leading up to his 10th birthday.
