A whopping 3,313 potholes were reported to the city in 2022, which probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise to those used to winter driving.
The amount of potholes repaired in 2022 was 3,296, which is 95.5 per cent according to information provided by Terry Dooling, manager of public works for the City of Guelph.
So far this year 639 potholes have been logged. With 470 of those already repaired.
In 2021, 1,436 potholes were reported in Guelph. A significant difference of 1,877 potholes reported, between last year and the year before,
"There is no significant reasoning or explanation for the increase in potholes," said Stefany Snedden, communications officer and public services for the city of Guelph, in an email.
With the mild weather in January followed by a deep freeze, conditions didn’t seem to make the pothole situation worse.
“Not really, while the weather was on the mild side for January, (hovering around zero) temperatures didn’t rise enough to have the frost come out of the ground,” said Dooling in an email.
In terms of damage claims for vehicles due to potholes this year, Dooling didn’t have any information.
In 2022, there were 86 pothole claims filed with the city, all were vehicle related, 48 were paid, information provided by Snedden.
The worst streets in Guelph for potholes, well it changes year to year.
“Annually we do our best to permanently repair ‘chronic’ locations during our spring/early summer pothole repair program,” said Dooling.
