One person killed in Guelph fire on Saturday

Happened on Mayfield Avenue, just south of Stone Road and east of Gordon Street

Officials confirm an older man died Saturday in a Guelph fire.

The fire happened at 12 Mayfield Ave., a small street in a well-manicured treed subdivision across from the University of Guelph, just south of Stone Road.

"Emergency services were called at 2:42 p.m. Saturday to a reported house fire on Mayfield Avenue. Officers arrived three minutes later to find the house fully engulfed and were unable to make entry. The Guelph Fire Department arrived moments later and began fighting the fire. Sadly, an elderly male was located deceased inside the residence," said police spokesperson. Scott Tracey.

Little damage could be seen to the house at the front on Sunday. Some smoke damage was visible near the doorway. All windows and doors were opened, presumably for venting purposes.

Investigators from the Guelph Fire Department and provincial fire marshall's office were both on scene Sunday morning going through the home.

An official on scene said few details could be released other than confirming one person died and it happened on Saturday.

The fire marshall's office is responsible for determining the cause of the fire, with Guelph police responsible for the death investigation.
