Ed Video recently moved to Silence on Essex Street.

The new year is bringing big changes for Guelph’s Ed Video Media Arts Centre, including temporary layoffs and a new location.

The media arts production centre, which has been in Guelph for over 45 years, is a facility with video equipment, exhibitions and workshops for artists.

As of Jan. 1, the charity moved from its long-time York Road location to Silence on 46 Essex St.

“This move represents a fresh chapter for the organization, providing us with an opportunity to be closer to downtown and collaborate with another arts organization under one roof,” said executive director Sarafina Bortolon-Vettor in a post on their website.

“Silence has been incredibly welcoming, and we look forward to a partnership that will foster creativity and innovation within the arts community.”

At the same time, she said they regret to inform the community that all staff have been temporarily laid off from January to April 2025.

“The layoff will include all staff members, including myself, but this is a temporary measure,” she said. “We are committed to welcoming everyone back once we receive our core funding in the spring.”

In the meantime, Ed Video will rely on volunteers and operate with reduced hours, open Tuesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, the centre is closed until Jan. 21 to facilitate the move to Silence.

Bortolon-Vettor noted they’ve launched a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising $20,000 to sustain their work.
