NEWS RELEASE
ART NOT SHAME
*************************
Art Not Shame and the Guelph Neighbourhood Support Coalition are excited to announce a new community produced mural that has a permanent home at the Guelph Farmers’ Market thanks to 10C.
Art in a Just Recovery was a community arts project that ran over several weeks this past winter. There were over 100 Guelph-based participants who came together with social artist Melanie Schambach and several Art Buddies (14 artists specializing in multiple arts mediums) at locations all over the city to create a digital mural. The mural explores community care in the context of our ongoing pandemic recovery in Guelph.
The finished mural was printed in a large-scale format and unveiled at a community event that happened June 7, 2023. This event was attended by over 100 people in celebration with music, art-making, food and a panel discussion about the mural making process. CFRU was present to record the proceedings which can be listened to via their archives.
“The unveiling event was a beautiful way for the Art in a Just Recovery participants and their families and friends to come together and celebrate the layers of stories within the mural,” says Maeve Hind, local interdisciplinary artist and program director. “It was a wonderful experience to be one of the organizers for the event and we cannot wait for everyone in the Guelph community to see it for themselves.”
The mural will be displayed permanently at the Guelph Farmers’ Market.
- Art Not Shame offers their deepest gratitude to the event sponsors and supporters:
- Blooms & Flora who provided beautiful arrangements for the tables.
- A generous donation from Skyline.
- CFRU who recorded the entire event.
- The Neighbourhood Group who provided gifts for participants and volunteers.
- 10C for coordination of the space for the mural to be hung.
- Community Fewd for providing a delicious meal to those that attended.
