RIVER RUN CENTRE

The Men of the Deeps coal miner’s choir has certainly struck a chord with Guelph audiences during its 50-year history.
That’s why it’s no surprise the choir’s Sunday, April 10, performance at River Run Centre is nearly sold out already.
The Main Stage performance takes place at 2 p.m. and is presented as part of the RBC Showcase Series.
A choir of working and retired coal miners from Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island, The Men of the Deeps are both East Coast ambassadors and a Canadian institution.
During its Guelph performance, the 28-member group, under the direction of Stephen Muise, will present a time-honoured program of coal mining songs from around the world, in addition to many that preserve Cape Breton’s rich folklore and history.
The choir’s River Run Centre performance is part of its 50th anniversary tour.
Formed in 1966 as part of Cape Breton’s contribution to Canada’s centennial celebration, The Men of the Deeps proved an overwhelming success.
During the past five decades, the choir has toured across Canada and internationally, released numerous recordings and shared the stage with luminaries including Rita MacNeil, Anne Murray and Roger Whittaker.
The choir has also made numerous national and international television appearances and is the subject of a feature film and book chronicling its history.
The Men of the Deeps’ current 50th anniversary tour across southern Ontario is the first of two celebratory tours the choir will undertake this year and next.
The Men of the Deeps will also mark Canada’s sesquicentennial with a series of performances in July 2017.
A favourite of audiences from coast to coast and the only group of its kind, The Men of the Deeps keep tradition alive through heartfelt performances.
More than a singing group, the choir has become an iconic symbol for its role in preserving an important chapter in Canadian history.
