GuelphToday received the following Letter to the Editor from reader and downtown business person Pina Marfisi regarding a proposed public space use bylaw heading to city council on Wednesday:
It is time for the citizens of Guelph to recognize and truly understand what is actually occurring in the downtown core. The encampment should not merely be classified as a homeless issue, it has become a hub for illegal activities, including human trafficking, drug dealing, overt drug use and inciting public violence and disturbances.
The environment is unsafe for everyone but don’t just take my word for it, speak to any police officer involved with the downtown. Our homeless individuals need help but they are often not being directed to appropriate resources.
I strongly urge citizens to research where their donations are going, and how they are actually benefiting those in need.
Labelling this situation simply as a “homeless encampment” misrepresents the reality.
Disturbing incidents have been witnessed, and unfortunately, police often feel powerless to intervene effectively. This is unfair to those who genuinely want and require assistance.
We must pass this public space bylaw for the safety and welfare of everyone involved.
Many individuals in the downtown encampment have access to shelter, but choose a lifestyle that includes these illegal activities and drug use contributing to the lawlessness and disturbances.
The loud minority drowns out the voices of those in need.
Our community deserves better. Citizens should feel safe in their downtown area. We must find a balanced approach to support those in need while maintaining the integrity of our public spaces and this bylaw can help get us there.
Thank you
Pina Marfisi
