Guelph residents are invited to attend memorial events on Sunday, Jan. 28 that mark the centenary anniversary of Lt. Col. John McCrae’s passing.
Guelph Museums, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the 11th Field Artillery Regiment and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 234 are co-hosting events around the city.
- Guelph Civic Museum, displays and reflections with free admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, memorial service starting at 10:30 a.m.
- McCrae House National Historic Site, displays and reflections with free admission from 12 to 5 p.m.
- McCrae Memorial Gardens, wreath-laying ceremony by Prince Arthur Guelph Loyal Orange Lodge No. 1331 starting at 12:30 p.m.
- Performance titled John McCrae: His Life in Words, Images and Song, featuring Hugh Brewster and the Elora Festival Singers at the River Run Centre. Tickets are $25 and are available at ca or the box office. The performance starts at 3 p.m.
Lt. Col. John McCrae was a Canadian doctor during the First World War and writer of the famous poem, In Flanders Fields.
Commemorative events celebrating the late John McCrae will continue in April and May. Guelph Museums is hosting a group tour with up to 36 participants in Belgium and France to trace McCrae’s steps during the war. The tour will end with a memorial service at his gravesite.
The tour will depart on April 27 and return May 5. There are still spaces left and interested residents can visit Guelph Museums for more information or call 519-745-1860 ext. 303.
