The ice rink at Market Square has been taped off and closed due to “high temperatures and deteriorating ice conditions.”

Hang up the skates, the Market Square ice rink is closing up shop for the year.

The city made the announcement on its website Friday morning.

The rink in front of city hall on Carden Street opened on Dec. 13, and for 89 days – depending on weather – patrons were able to get in some free skating.

The city had closed the rink Sunday afternoon due to "high temperatures and deteriorating ice conditions."

It reopened Wednesday with hopes of getting a few more days of use.

Even with the ice plant operating at full capacity, a city spokesperson said the rink needs temperatures of five degrees or colder overnight to "keep the ice set and in place on the pad."

Over the next week, Environment Canada said overnight temperatures in Guelph are only expected to dip below freezing on Sunday.

The daytime high on Saturday is 18 C, but a 60 per cent chance of showers.
