While there has been no official announcement from the party itself, it looks like a Brampton realtor will be the Conservative Party of Canada's candidate for the Guelph riding in the next federal election.
Gurvir Khaira confirmed local rumours he is the candidate on his X page @GurvirForGuelph Wednesday.
"I am proud to announce that I will be your next common sense Conservative Party of Canada candidate for Guelph. I am immensely grateful for the response I have received thus far at the doors. I can never forget the love I’ve received in Guelph and I can’t wait to work alongside you to bring a positive change to our beloved riding," Khaira said on the post.
The Guelph Conservative Party of Canada riding association would not confirm or deny who the local candidate is going to be, saying only that an official announcement would be made soon. They had previously stated there were several candidates interested in seeking the nomination but did not release any names.
A Google search of Khaira show he was previously running to be the CPC's nominee for the riding of Brampton East, but those links now send you to Khaira's social media sites for running in Guelph.
On his social media X page Khaira has posted photos of himself in front of the Welcome To Guelph sign with former longtime provincial MPP Parm Gill, who stepped down from provincial politics earlier this year to run in the federal election for the Milton riding.
Khaira calls Gill "a mentor and trusted friend."
Khaira is listed as a realtor with Brampton's Homelife Silvercity Realty although on the Real Estate Council of Ontario's web site his registration status is listed as "suspended." He later told GuelphToday he is currently attending law school.
I hope to be the first person born in this millennium to be elected to the House of Commons, and I trust that together we will not only paint Guelph blue but also make history. I promise to work tirelessly to axe the tax, build the homes, fix the budget, and stop the crime.
When contacted for an interview, Khaira said all interview requests had to go through the party's head office and he would pass along the request.
The Green party is selecting its local candidate this Saturday.
The local Liberals previously selected Dominique O'Rourke as their candidate and Janice Folk-Dawson is the local NDP candidate.
