NEWS RELEASE
ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH 234
***********************
On Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 234 in Guelph will host Remembrance Day services around the City to honour our veterans and the values of democracy, freedom, and justice they fought to protect.

Guelph is proud to be the birthplace of Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, the respected physician and poet who created the iconic poem “In Flanders Fields.” Written during World War I, the powerful verse captures the grim realities of war and has become one of the most recognized symbols of remembrance.

Another Guelph connection includes the contributions of individuals like Mary Barnaby Fountain, a local woman featured on a new Remembrance Day stamp honouring the Farmerettes who played a crucial role during both World Wars. The stamp highlights the diverse contributions of Canadians in wartime and reminds us that remembrance extends beyond the battlefield.

In recent years, Remembrance Day has evolved to include initiatives that engage younger generations. Many schools and community organizations host educational programs and ceremonies to teach the significance of the day and pass on the legacy of our veterans. As well, the Royal Canadian Legion continues to raise funds to support veterans and their families through the poppy campaign. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has made a donation for a poppy. Your contribution not only supports the Legion’s work but also helps ensure that the sacrifices of our veterans are remembered and honoured.

Join us on Monday, November 11, 2024, to commemorate the bravery and dedication of our servicemen and women. Your presence is a tribute to their sacrifices and a reminder of the importance of peace.
