The Guelph Police Venturers hit the streets of Guelph on Saturday looking to do a good turn.
The scouting troop made up of boys and girls 14 to 17 year old was in St. George's Square throughout the afternoon collecting personal hygiene items, sleeping bags and tents to help create care packages to be distributed to the homeless.
People dropped off toothpaste, shampoo and other essentials, others gave cash. Some took a list of needed items to purchase and donate at a later date.
Venturer Josephine Lonergan came up with the idea after spending Take Your Kid To Work Day with a friend's mom, who works at the Guelph Community Health Centre. The items and money collected Saturday will go towards the centres Warm Connections program.
"It's a toiletry donation drive and we've also received some funding to purchase survival kits for them," said Lonergan, 15.
The event was part of Scouts Canada's Good Turn Week, a nationwide event that saw scouting groups of various ages perform good turns in their community.
"We just wanted to do something local, that would help our local community," Lonergan said.
Venturers and their supporters spread out throughout St. George's Square to engage passers-by. Mayor Cam Guthrie also dropped to say hello and help spread the word via Twitter.
