Guelph police has delivered on its promise to transition all its marked front line cruisers to hybrid vehicles.

The pledge was made in 2019 by police chief Gord Cobey, telling those gathered at an event "it was the right thing to do."

Since then, the older fleet vehicles have been cycled out and its 32 marked vehicles in the fleet are hybrids.

Police said the switch to hybrid will save them 60,000 litres of fuel each year.

Back during the launch event three years ago, Guelph police fleet manager Jim Turow said the hope was to cut its fuel bill by about $50,000 annually.

"It was an important commitment, and just as important is completing the commitment," Cobey told the police board during Thursday's meeting. "It's aligned with our commitment to the environment and the city's (corporate) goal to reach net (zero) carbon emissions by 2050."
