When the Guelph Police Services board meets next month, it will do so under the leadership of a new chair.
Robert Carter, who has been on the board the last four years, led his last board meeting Thursday afternoon.
"I'm pretty confident that you never imagined that you'd be leading the board, the service and serving the community throughout a very complex time, a global pandemic," police chief Gord Cobey told Carter during the meeting.
"But throughout your tenure, you demonstrated your sincere commitment to our community ... On behalf of our community and our members, a sincere thank you."
Mayor Cam Guthrie said he looks at Carter as a mentor, in terms of trying to balance things and how to talk to other people on boards.
"You've been a great chair, and a great friend," he said. "Thank you very much for your help."
Carter joined the board in Jan. 2019 after a 44-year career with the University of Guelph in several senior leadership roles.
He said it was a "real pleasure and an honour to serve as chair," commending the leadership provided by Cobey and deputy chief Daryl Goetz.
"That's very important to have that sort of leadership, encouraging members, relating well to members, taking their input," Carter said.
He said he's looking forward to doing "some different stuff, like maybe some travelling and things like that."
The next meeting will be held Dec. 15. There's no word yet on who will take over the chair position.
