Guelph hairstylist takes home two awards from national competition

Derrick Rutherford of Valentini Hair Design won in the texture hairstylist and multicultural hairstylist categories for the 36th annual Contessa Awards

Guelph’s Derrick Rutherford won two hairstylist awards in a national hairstylist and beauty professionals competition on the weekend.

This was the 36th annual Contessa Awards, a Canada-wide professional beauty photo-based competition. It was founded in 1988 and awards professionals with talent in hair, colour, makeup and nails.

The winners of the Contessa Awards were announced Nov. 10 at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto. A special shout-out was given to Rutherford and other hairstylist winners Breanne Gershon and Tina Casciato, in a press release from Salon Magazine.

Rutherford of Valentini Hair Design, won in the texture hairstylist category and multicultural hairstylist category. Three photos of three different models with hair by Rutherford were submitted for each category and before photos of all of them were submitted too.

The winners’ work from the competition is set to be featured in the January/February issue of Salon Magazine.

Rutherford isn’t unfamiliar to competing. He and his partner Julio Rodriguez have competed in the North American Hairstyling Awards, the IBI Awards and other competitions in the past.
