Collector’s Dilemma, an annual fundraising auction of fine art previously owned by local collectors is back online. The auction runs May 6-20, 2021, with proceeds going to Guelph Arts Council to help support arts and artists of all disciplines in Guelph and Wellington County.
This year more than 80 works of art are up for auction thanks to the generosity of local art collectors who have run out of wall space or are making room for new pieces. A wide range of media, styles, sizes, and values is available, with opening bids as low as $25. You can preview the art now on the auction site.
“We’re excited about the wide selection of art available this year, and so grateful to the community for donating these works,” says volunteer event co-ordinator Stephanie Comely. “For people who have been spending a lot of time at home and want to freshen up their space, this auction is an excellent opportunity to buy fine art at great prices and support the arts in Guelph-Wellington.”
This is the second year Collector’s Dilemma has gone online because of the pandemic. Bidding opens May 6 at 9 a.m. Bidders can create a 32 Auctions account now to be notified when the auction goes live. Payment is online and COVID-safe pickup will be arranged after the auction. (For buyers outside the Guelph area, shipping may be arranged at the purchaser’s expense).
If you see a piece you like but the frame doesn’t suit you, Kloepfer Custom Framing in downtown Guelph is offering 25 per cent off reframing of art purchased at the auction.
Although not yet legislated in Canada, Guelph Arts Council supports the artists' resale right. In that spirit, and to help support local artists, GAC has established a royalty policy for artists whose work is resold at Collector's Dilemma.
“This has been an exceptionally challenging year for musicians, performers, visual artists and makers of all kinds, as the events and venues where they make their living have been closed,” says GAC executive director Patti Broughton. “GAC has pivoted to support artists and arts organizations through online services, including our new Guelph Arts Hub, which is set to go live in May. We’re so grateful to the community for supporting us in this work by participating in Collector’s Dilemma.”
