The University of Guelph and Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health are investigating the rapid spread of gastroenteritis among university students on campus.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the university said there were around 60 cases of gastroenteritis, commonly known as the stomach flu. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain or cramping, fever or chills, headache, body aches and fatigue.
The majority of cases are in South Residence, though there have been others reported throughout and beyond campus.
“This number has been increasing over the course of the investigation. This is impacting students on campus, but we also believe some off campus students are affected,” said Danny Williamson, spokesperson for WDGPH.
“Our team is working closely with the University of Guelph to investigate the source of illnesses and manage the cases. Those who have been affected appear to be recovering well and quickly.”
The university has implemented measures to help prevent the spread, including additional cleaning by custodial staff, who will wear protective equipment in infected areas on campus.
There is also an awareness campaign planned to promote hygiene and best practices to prevent the spread.
Williamson said while the cluster of illnesses appears mostly connected to the university for the time being, “that could change or not.”
“The best thing members of the public can do is to be really diligent with hand hygiene, and be aware of the symptoms,” he said.
Those experiencing symptoms should stay home when ill and for 48 hours after the last bout of vomiting or diarrhea.
“Increased handwashing and cleaning of frequently touched surfaces are essential to reducing the spread. Anyone who is ill should not handle any food being served to others when possible. People should contact their primary care provider if symptoms are unmanageable at home,” he said.
Further updates on the situation at the university will be posted here.
