Feds pony up cash for Centre Wellington bridge repairs

Funds part of special Canada 150 infrastructure project

CENTRE WELLINGTON - The federal government was handing out cash Thursday just outside Fergus, helping improve and maintain bridges on the areas trail system.

Guelph MP Lloyd Longfield announced $49,500 for repairs to the Trestle Bridge Trail’s pedestrian bridges in Aboyne.

Three government representatives were on hand Thursday for the announcement, delivered by Longfield. He was joined by Wellington County Warden Dennis Lever and Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong.

Longfield said the project is one of 350 projects being done in Southern Ontario under the second intake of the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

In total the program has delivered 730 projects totalling $88.8 million, Longfield said.

The program supports the renovation, expansion and improvement of existing community and cultural infrastructure.

The improvements being done to the bridges include concrete repairs, timber railway tie repairs and replacements, replacement of wooden walking surface with composite material and the removal of trees and vegetation around the bridge abutment.
