PUSLINCH – A family with six children have been displaced from their Aberfoyle home following a house fire that caused heavy roof damage.

Puslinch fire chief Jamie MacNeil said the department responded to a reported house fire on Wellington Road 34 near Brock Road just after 5:20 p.m. on Monday.

Crews found a heavy fire at the rear of the home but were able to quickly knock the fire down.

“It was into the roof structure and just starting to hinge into the main kitchen, main body of the house when crews got the fire down,” MacNeil said.

One teenage male was transported to hospital for minor smoke inhalation.

A family of eight lived at the home and have been displaced due to heavy roof damage. The Red Cross was brought in to assist the family with temporary lodging.

The fire is not considered suspicious but the cause will be undetermined as MacNeil said there are too many variables. He estimated damage to be between $100,000 and $150,000 depending on the extent of repairs needed.

“My guess is at least bare minimum the roof is going to have to come off,” he said.

MacNeil noted this family was alerted to the fire because there were working smoke detectors on the property, which was not the case at another recent fire the service attended.

Around 3:20 a.m. Sunday, MacNeil said crews responded to a fire at a home on Queen Street in Morriston caused by unattended cooking.

There were no working smoke alarms at the home.

“From our standpoint it was a good thing a neighbour was up and saw the smoke and flames and called us right away,” he said.

There were no injuries reported from that fire.
