City seeks non-profit builder for affordable housing pilot project

At least 12 units to be constructed on city-owned land, to be donated to the builder

City officials are on the hunt for non-profit builders interested in taking on a pilot project aimed at creating affordable housing units.

The initiative, approved by council in October, would see at least 12 affordable units built during the redevelopment of 14 Edinburgh Rd. S. That property is currently owned by the city, but the plan calls for it to be donated to the selected builder in order to reduce the cost of construction.

In addition, up to $1.5 million in grant funding is available for the project via city-run programs, with funding provided through the federal Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF).

“We are excited to contribute this land and funding to create more opportunities for affordable housing,” Mayor Cam Guthrie said in a news release. “Thank you to the federal government for the essential support provided through the Housing Accelerator Fund, which helped make this project possible.”

Submitted proposals will be evaluated based on the projected building timeline, the total number of units proposed and additional criteria set through the HAF.

Proposals must be submitted to the city by April 11 in order to be eligible.

More information about the request for proposals can be found here.
