Will there be community celebrations for Canada Day in Guelph next year? City officials certainly hope so.
In a Monday afternoon news release, the City called on community organizations to consider taking over the July 1 festivities traditionally held at Riverside Park and submit their proposal for consideration.
“Canada Day is a time when the community enjoys gathering to connect and celebrate,” said Danna Evans, the City’s general manager of culture and recreation, in the release. “We’re looking for a passionate organization with creative ideas for us to support and I’m excited to see the proposals we receive.”
Festivities for 2024 were cancelled in May, after the Rotary Club of Guelph announced it could no longer spearhead the event in light of financial and manpower pressures.
Expressions of interest are being accepted until Nov. 14.
“If there is no interest from the community, we will reevaluate the needed budget and resources to see what other event options, including fireworks, drone show or equivalent (pending the outcome of the fireworks use bylaw) could be led by City staff,” Evans said in an emailed response to questions from GuelphToday.
Up to $40,000 in city funding is available to support the event in 2025.
“Businesses and community groups are welcome to apply, but only registered non-profit or charitable organizations will be eligible to receive support funding from the City,” explains the release.
Submitted proposals will be evaluated based on each proponent’s experience coordinating special events, access to staffing and volunteer resources, proven success in securing partnerships and sponsorships, consideration of inclusive and equitable events, and more.
